Home Meetings Rule Changes Board Minutes Post Season Requirements New Officials Extras Links

This page is intended to provide basic information to individuals looking to get into basketball officiating.

First, you need to learn the rules.  The best way is to attend the meetings designed specifically for this purpose.  See the Meetings page. At the meetings you'll be able to purchase a rule book & case book.  Also try to get your hands on an "Officials Manual" or mechanics handbook.  Hint: save some money, ask an official you know for their book from last year, then check this website for this year's changes.

Extra Rules sources: Online course, http://www.asep.com.  Order books, www.referee.com/books/catalog.htm.  Online discussions, http://www.officialforum.com/index.php.  Ask a question at our local Area 10 discussion forum.

You must take the test.  See Meetings.  The test costs about $60, bring to Test Night.  Passing is 86%.

You will need a uniform.  A complete description is in the Manual.  Striped shirt, black pants, black socks, black shoes.  Grey shirts are Not approved.  Belt is optional.  Jacket is optional (usually worn for varsity games).  You will probably spend around $100 for a uniform.

Make sure your local assignors know your name.  Jason Bandy, south.  Gary Hoffner, north.  Jeff Gotto, north.  Test night is a good opportunity to meet them, and make sure they have your phone number.

Attend 4 meetings annually.

Pay local dues.  Area 10 is $5, due Test Night every year.

Pay Board 4 dues.  Roughly $80, due in March every year.

Game fees are set by CHSAA.  $52 for varsity games, sub-varsity $36.  Meals $6.  See Board 4 Handbook for latest.  Varsity games are $44 with 3 person crew.
