Area Directors: This information, disseminated by the Big 12 Women's Supervisor of Officials, Becky Marshall, pertains to our high school games as well. This is particularly true in light of the Lincoln/North incident.
Please pass this information to the officials in your area.

Subject: FYI
--- Recognize "off ball" action that is "non-basketball" play...i. e. shoving, bumping, holding...This can lead to rough play and retaliation. Send a message by calling this action early, and letting the players know
that this type of illegal action will not be allowed.
---Use intentional fouls for hard contact at any time during the game. I continue to see hard contact that is not called intentional. Do not be afraid to use this tool.
---Each out-of-bounds call is important. Work hard to get into position to see the action, but if you need help, ask. If you are the official who is asked, don't guess. Out of bounds calls and traveling are some of our most difficult calls. At lead, we often do not move toward baseline action or loose ball action if it is across the paint from us...don't hesitate to go where the action is so we can improve our chance of seeing the play.
---Trail and Center officials are not having whistles on fouls that they see in the paint area...thinking that someone else will have the call. Have a whistle...it does not mean you will take the call, but your support whistle is important. Remember, we want more calls from T and C positions. Call what you see, not what you THINK you see.
---Traveling....we are doing a better job of watching the defense and beyond, but remember to be in a position several yards behind the dribbler, so we are still aware of the dribbler, though not focused on them. Too often we are even with the dribbler and cannot see them without turning our head, thus taking away our view of the defense and beyond.
---Loose-ball contact that does not have a player going for the ball, but landing on or contacting an opposing player in order to prevent them from controlling the ball must be recognized and a foul called. Let's do a better job watching the entire play and recognizing illegal contact during loose balls.
